Volunteer Spotlight: Vivian Hodges

We had the pleasure of catching up with one of our dedicated volunteers, who shared their heartwarming experiences and insights from their time with Hospice of the Foothills. Let's dive into their journey!

How long have you volunteered with Hospice of the Foothills?

Since October 2022.

What volunteer role(s) do you serve?

Initially, I started as a friendly visitor, and now I serve as respite relief. Additionally, I help facilitate bereavement tables twice a month and join the vigil team as needed.

Why did you choose Hospice of the Foothills to spend your volunteer time with?

After moving to Grass Valley four years ago, I was drawn to Hospice of the Foothills due to their remarkable reputation. Having experienced hospice care firsthand with my mother, I felt compelled to give back to an organization that had made such a meaningful impact on my family.

What keeps you volunteering with us?

The rewarding feeling of being of service and helping our clients is what keeps me returning. The sense of community here is truly special, and I cherish the opportunity to meet new people and offer support wherever I can. It's essential for me to engage in this type of service, knowing that I'm making a difference, no matter how small.

Any touching/special stories you might have about a patient that made an impact on you?

I had a memorable experience during a recent respite relief visit with a dementia patient and her husband. Despite her mostly sleeping state, I sat with her and quietly introduced myself. As she woke up briefly, she expressed a desire for gum, which she often chewed. She struggled with her words but managed to ask me to wash her face. The simple act of washing her face brought a smile to her face, and her gratitude touched me deeply. It was a blessing to spend that time with her and offer a bit of comfort.

Anything else you’d like to share that could motivate someone to come volunteer with us?

Many may feel that hospice work isn't for them, but for me, it's incredibly rewarding. Every life is valuable, and volunteering with hospice allows us to show individuals and their caregivers that they are not alone during this challenging time. Whether it's offering companionship, providing respite relief, or simply being there to listen, our presence can make a world of difference. Hospice is a place where we can give our time to make others' lives a little brighter, and I highly recommend this fulfilling experience to anyone looking to make a positive impact in someone's life, no matter how brief the encounter may be.

Join us in spreading compassion and support at Hospice of the Foothills. Your presence can bring comfort and solace to those in need, enriching both their lives and yours. Learn more about volunteering!
