Patient Support & Professional Services

Our patient support volunteers perform many tasks for
Hospice of the Foothills patients and their families.

One of the most important things a volunteer can offer a patient is time: time to sit with them; time to listen to their stories and share their lives; time to offer caregivers a break from the difficult tasks of caring for a loved one.

Volunteers can also offer their professional services to help patients; cosmetologists, licensed or certified massage therapists, pet visitors and musicians are always a welcome addition to our volunteer team.

Bereavement volunteers focus on providing comfort to the family after the patient dies by supporting them through their bereavement process. Additional training is provided to prepare volunteers to provide support with phone calls or visits. Bereavement volunteers also provide co-facilitation for our support groups and individual counseling for Hospice of the Foothills families and community members.
Becoming a Hospice of the Foothills volunteer is immensely rewarding as well as an important commitment.

We ask that volunteers serve a minimum of one year and dedicate an average of 2-4 hours per week to patient support. We require volunteers to complete our bereavement program training and to attend at least one monthly team meeting.

Hospice of the Foothills will provide training and support for volunteers in the role of Direct Patient Support Volunteer. Training provides information about the hospice philosophy and concept, guidelines and practical skills, and gives volunteers the confidence to stay with a patient while their caregiver takes a break. After training, volunteers are assigned to work with patients and their families within a geographical area convenient for the volunteer. Our Volunteer Coordinator is always available for support, encouragement, and guidance.
